When Trevor Fenwick graduated from high school in a small town in Indiana, he set one goal for himself. "I was going to get a passport and fill it up," he says. Since then, he's run with the bulls in Spain, driven on the auto-bahn in Germany, paraglided in Turkey, studied Shakespeare in London, taught English in Kyoto and South Korea and worked in an ashram in India.

But he didn't want to just be a tourist. "I try to stay in places for an extended period of time," he says, to get to know the people and learn about different cultures. "That's invaluable," he says. "It helps me appreciate our culture more too."

In his travels, Trevor discovered Zen Buddhism, a philosophy that resonated with him. "The most important thing in my life is being present," he says. He was recently ordained as a lay Buddhist with the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives and is actively involved with the local Portland center. "Eventually, I want to become a monk," he says.

Trevor got his start in the mortgage industry working a temporary job in Denver. In four years, he worked in almost all functions of the lending side, from loan setup to document drawing and underwriting. He was eventually promoted to account executive, becoming a top producer for the company. He credits his ability to succeed with being a quick learner and not getting stressed out in tough situations. "Meditation really works," he says. "When things get crazy, I can keep my center."

After the mortgage business started to take a dive in early 2006, Trevor decided he needed a break. He moved to an intentional gay community in New Mexico, where he learned to live off the grid, about cob building, solar power and Native American spirituality. From there he went to live in a Zen Monastery in California for a several months before he moved to Portland.

"I wasn't planning on returning to the mortgage business, but I saw an ad for Rose City," he says. "Ultimately a job is all about who you work with, and these are people I want to work with."

Trevor studied filmmaking in college and he's working on a screenplay about Roshi Jiyu-Kennett the first woman and first foreigner to be ordained at the Royal Soto Zen Buddhist temple in the 1960s. He loves Portland's independent movie scene and all the cultural opportunities.
